The Zone of Interest (2023) - Something that could have been much more

Image
The Zone of Interest (2023) I've never felt so disappointed after leaving the theater, oh my. Everyone present with me after the viewing was disappointed, but very disappointed. How could this happen? How did it happen that perhaps my most anticipated film of the year, acclaimed by everyone, turned out to be nothing more than a mediocre "movie"? Damn, the expectations were sky high, the basic idea was absurd and brilliant, so what doesn't work in this "The Zone Of Interest"?! Well, several things, but I'll start with the positive notes: the minimal and slow direction is good, not great, but good, the cinematography is excellent, the actors are good and the sets and sound are the most noteworthy aspects of the film. Having said that, what led me to give such a low rating to the film that Alfonso Cuarón defines as the most important of the century (among other things, this speaks as if he hadn't himself directed one of the best films of the cen...

Oppenheimer (2023) - Christopher Nolan's Stylistic Magnum Opus

Image
Oppenheimer (2023) I'll try to be concise, taking into account the fact that there would be endless talk about this film. Let's start from the fact that my expectations were quite average, taking into account Nolan's latest films (especially Tenet), but despite this I tried to see the film as impartially as possible. Yet, the exact moment I stepped into the IMAX theater, I already knew inside of me that I was going to encounter a completely different experience from the ones I have previously had in seeing a film. And so it was: the moment the lights went out and the film began, I knew I had embarked on a journey of no return. Summarizing everything, I would say that it was without a doubt a mystical experience, this is the film, no longer the IMAX theater. In fact, Oppenheimer is truly a fine film. Paul Schrader called it the most important film of the century, I agree in part: as a message we are faced with the history of our time, of our world and especially of o...

The Hangover (2009) - An Endless Classic

Image
The Hangover (2009) I just watched "The Hangover" again yesterday with my girlfriend, I hadn't done it for a few months, but despite this I'm surprised every time by the shamelessness of this absurd story. I don't know, maybe it's because I have an emotional attachment to this film or something, but every time I happen to watch it I'm always happier than the previous time, it's as if it were an anti-stress film for me. Everything is a bomb, but truly an absurd bomb, from the grainy and crunchy cinematography (almost as if you could taste it), to the direction, up to other technical elements that do not go unnoticed in the slightest. The driving force of the film, however, lies in the story, which is still brilliant and absolutely aimed at anyone (I imagine that everyone more or less found themselves in the same situation as the protagonists, obviously in a more contained and credible perspective), where scenes and high-level quotes had immediatel...

Killers Of The Flower Moon (2023) - A Heartbreaking but Necessary Story

Image
Killers Of The Flower Moon (2023) I've been waiting for this movie since the day it was announced way back in 2020. Both for the story, for the actors and for many other elements, but in particular I was waiting to see how far master Martin Scorsese would go on this occasion: needless to say that as always he managed to go beyond expectations that every person could imagine. "Killers of the Flower Moon" is in fact, so far, in my humble opinion, the film of the year. I won't stop to talk about the perfect direction of this film, the incredible and never boring pace despite the duration, the unique cinematography of Rodrigo, the authentic sets, the historically perfect costumes, the always innovative and never banal editing of Thelma, the perfectly measured and never invasive soundtrack by Robbie Robertson, or the literally Oscar-worthy performances of every single character on stage, in particular DiCaprio who gives a maniacal acting performance, full of humani...

Creep (2014) - When Simplicity Wins over Everything

Image
Creep (2014) "Creep" is a marvel. So it's actually quite scary, quite scary, but it's a wonder how on an incredibly small budget they were able to make such a brilliant and successful film. On the technical side it is a classic "fake documentary", therefore shot quite amateurishly, but this is not a flaw at all, quite the opposite: being an intrinsic element of the plot, preparatory to the unfolding of events, it is pleasant and well contextualised within the movie. It goes without saying that the most successful aspects are the performances and the story. The two actors are very good, but the jewel in the crown is undoubtedly Mark Duplass: his portrayal of Josep is as frightening as it is mysterious and it is precisely these aspects that make him one of the most, as the title suggests, creepy characters, not only of history but also of all horror cinema. The plot, as I have repeated several times, is the perfect example of quality over quantity: few locat...

The Boy and The Heron (2023) - A Modern Masterpiece of Art and Imagination

Image
The Boy and the Heron (2023) Ok, here we are finally. I want to start with a very small premise: I will give some spoilers, not so much because I feel like ruining the film for people, but rather because I see this review more as a stream of consciousness than anything else, useful primarily for me to fully understand, or at least try to understand what I saw.Let's start right away (I'm on my way to doing the longest and most substantial review I've ever done 💀), by saying that this film is splendid. I must say that there were a lot of expectations on my part around this "The Boy and the Heron", obviously given by the fact that Studio Ghibli is synonymous with quality and that the aura around Master Hayao Miyazaki is now on a par with that of a deity. It certainly can't be said that I started out completely apathetic towards the film, not at all. Also because being lucky enough to see it in IMAX meant that my expectations were already sky high even before e...
